Tourists, winter visitors and others with (foreign) health insurance
Those who (still) have health insurance in their home countries can claim the costs of the consultation from this insurance. This concerns GP care / acute care abroad. This falls outside the excess. It is advisable to ask the insurance company for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). This card gives discounts at pharmacies, among other things, and is used by hospitals in Portugal.
Residents
Residents without insurance in their country of origine are advised to apply for a Número de Utente at the local health centre (Centro de Saúde). This is a kind of health insurance number (actually the registration number in the Sistema Nacional de Saúde), which gives you a discount at the pharmacy and gives you better access to the Portuguese healthcare system in general.
Private doctor
As Dr Folmer is a private doctor, his services are not reimbursed by the Portuguese health insurance fund. This also applies to private hospitals such as, for example, HPA (Hospital Particular Algarve) and Lusíades. It may therefore be advisable to take out private health insurance in addition to registration in the SNS. There are several providers on the market. Look and compare!
Doctor Folmer can refer you to both private and state hospitals if necessary. Generally, private hospitals have shorter waiting times and are easier for non-Portuguese to access. Moreover, you can get better access to them with the English language.
As Doctor Folmer is not specifically linked to one particular private hospital, he can refer you to the best healthcare provider for you at that time. Because of his long experience in the Algarve, he has an extensive network at the various hospitals.
